Under normal circumstances, thin film capacitors are a type of capacitor with excellent stability. They are not as easily damaged as electrolytic capacitors, but due to price wars, there are now many low-quality thin film capacitors on the market that may be damaged during use. What is the phenomenon of thin film capacitors being damaged?

Which thin film capacitors are most susceptible to damage?

Under normal circumstances, as long as the selection is correct and does not work at extremely high temperatures and humidity, the lifespan of thin film capacitors is extremely long, and it is difficult to see damage to thin film capacitors.

At present, there are some ultra-low priced thin film capacitors on the market, which belong to the category of cut corners capacitors. Generally, they are printed with neutral characters without the product trademark, and these capacitors are easily damaged.

will happen if a thin film capacitor is damaged?

1. The capacity of thin film capacitors decreases or even disappears.

Thin film capacitors generally have self-healing properties, which means that after certain parts of the interior are broken down, they can automatically recover and self heal. However, the consequence is that the capacity will gradually decrease, and even in some serious cases, the capacity will disappear, and the capacitance will not be measured properly.

Especially when thin film capacitors are used in resistance capacitance voltage reduction circuits, they are most prone to capacity reduction faults. Using capacitors for voltage reduction requires extremely high quality of capacitors. Poor quality thin film capacitors will quickly decrease in capacity, ultimately leading to insufficient power supply and inability to use the entire circuit. It is recommended to choose branded film capacitors instead of neutral printed film capacitors, as the proportion of inferior capacitors in these types of capacitors is too high.

2. The loss value increases and the equivalent resistance increases.

The initial failure of metalized thin film capacitors manifests as a decrease in capacitance, an increase in loss value, or an increase in equivalent series resistance; After severe failure, the capacitance drops to zero and the capacitor becomes in an open circuit state.

Summary: Under normal circumstances, it is not a problem for thin film capacitors to be used for more than five years. Some high-quality thin film capacitors can even be used for eight to ten years. However, if you choose low-quality thin film capacitors with extremely low unit prices, their lifespan may be within one year or less, and these thin film capacitors are easily damaged.
